British officials ‘joked’ about moving everyone in Hong Kong to Northern Ireland
The previously secret documents from 1983 released Friday by the National Archives show plans officials drew up to resettle 5.5 million people from Hong Kong to a new city that would be built in the middle of Northern Ireland at the height of the Troubles.
The plan, according to the Belfast Telegraph, originated from a fear that the inhabitants of Hong Kong would have had no future after it was handed back to China in 1997. Read more…
